Marco Polo will NOT be in the competition for Most Excellent Explorer of 4S 2019, but you can read about him below.
Explorers like Marco Polo changed history, and that is why he could be the most important of all the explorers we learned about in 4S! How do explorers change history? They reveal mysteries and show curiosity! On the other hand, many explorers also change the places they "discover" in ways that we might think -- today -- are bad, or even shameful. Read on to see about Marco Polo's explorer legacy.
Marco Polo showed not only courage, but curiosity. At just 17 years old, he went with his dad and uncle to explore totally new lands and cultures. He left his home in Venice and crossed a desert and got all the way to the Far East of Asia. He learned about new ways to do things, like using coal for fuel and paper currency. He met emperors, learned new languages, and also made a good impression on the rulers of far-off lands. These rulers even wanted him to stay, but he needed to go back to his home. Many explorers we learned about did not treat the native people very well in the new lands the explored, but Polo was respected and admired by many.
Marco Polo also revealed mysteries for many people with his famous book "The Travels of Marco Polo". This book is his legacy, and many people in many countries were fascinated by the stories contained in this book. It is not certain that everything he said in the book was true -- sorcerers who could sing sharks to sleep? bandits who could conjure sandstorms at will? -- but he certainly made people excited to learn about the world beyond their own lands and homes.
Marco Polo may not be the most famous explorer we learned about in 4S, but he was the first and can easily be given a score of 8 out of 10, don't you agree?
